About Us

Staving Artist Woodwork is a small family owned and operated business in the Finger Lakes wine region of New York State. Our founder, Dan Mitchell, is a Finger Lakes native who has been immersed in the local wine industry for over fourteen years. Woodworking is his passion, and he loves showing wine enthusiasts how wine barrels and reclaimed wood can become beautiful and unique accents in their home. He started creating his own designs using recycled Finger Lakes wine barrels in 2005. Since then, Staving Artist Woodwork's customer base has gradually grown through referrals and word-of-mouth. Dan continues to personally hand-craft each and every piece of woodwork that we sell.

Dan's partner, Rachel (that's me!), came on board in 2016 and has been instrumental in growing the business through product design, web development, social media presence, and customer outreach. We were outgrowing our small woodshop and it became clear we would need to expand our space and have a convenient place for customers to pick up orders. In June of 2017, with our six-month-old son in tow, we opened our retail space on Main Street in Penn Yan. Taking that necessary leap has given us the chance to expand our creativity and work with new mediums, such as recycled redwood wine tank, champagne riddling racks, and many reclaimed hardwoods. We also love the daily interaction with our customers, many of them first-time visitors to the Finger Lakes Region.

Together, our intention is to create pieces of uncompromising quality for customers who value  design, function, and environmental sustainability.
By using over 90% recycled/reclaimed materials and minimizing waste wherever possible, we are able to offer products that are environmentally sound. We are incredibly grateful to our customers who repeatedly trust us and allow us to continue doing what we love.
